El sistema, LA-style

Los Angeles Philharmonic, in partnership with El Sistema USA and the League of American Orchestras, presents a three-day symposium, "Composing Change: YOLA and the El Sistema Movement"

MAY 6-8, 2010  AT EXPO CENTER (LA) AND WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL

YOUTH ORCHESTRA LOS ANGELES:
Gustavo Dudamel's signature program to transform young lives

The Los Angeles Philharmonic, in partnership with El Sistema USA and the League of American Orchestras, presents a three-day symposium, Composing Change: YOLA and the El Sistema Movement.

El Sistema of course is Venezuela's famously monumental music education program which teaches music to 300,000 of Venezuela’s poorest children, demonstrating the power of ensemble music to transform lives and communities and be an agent for social change; and El Sistema USA is the support and advocacy network for people and organizations throughout the US that it inspired.

YOLA (Youth Orchestra LA) is a network of public and private stakeholders in Los Angeles devoted to providing quality instrumental music education for children with the greatest needs, fewest resources and little or no access to instrumental music education. It was launched two and a half years ago by the LA Philharmonic in pursuit of its vision of a Los Angeles where every neighborhood's pride is its youth orchestra. Stakeholders within the network of Youth Orchestra LA include: city and county of Los Angeles, universities, LAUSD and other school districts in L.A. County, community music schools, non-profit music organizations, individual music educators, after-school programs such as Beyond the Bell and LA's Best, and funders.

The symposium takes place May 6-8, 2010 at EXPO Center and Walt Disney Concert Hall and focuses on El Sistema-influenced programs taking root beyond the borders of Venezuela. Serving as case study for the symposium will be the YOLA Expo Center Youth Orchestra Program and the original El Sistema icon GUSTAVO DUDAMEL. This program draws children from a cluster of schools in close proximity to the EXPO Center in Los Angeles, a community center run by the City Department of Recreation and Parks. The children receive free music instruction, instruments and the opportunity to participate in a community youth orchestra. Today, YOLA is part of a larger budding movement of El Sistema-inspired programs across the US. The symposium is intended to share what has been learned and to support the national El Sistema movement. Leaders, practitioners, and pioneers in the field will meet to broaden the conversation and become inspired to create a musical and social revolution in the U.S.
