MAUREEN O'FLYNN
SOPRANO

A fast rising soprano, Maureen O'Flynn's specialty is bel canto and her growing repertoire includes : Adina in L'elisir d'amore, Elvira in I Puritani, Marguerite in Faust, Leila in The Pearl Fishers, Amenaide in Tancredi, Juliette in Romeo et Juliette, Marie in The Daughter of the Regiment, Linda di Chamounix, - roles which she has performed to the delight of audiences all over the world.

Americans across the USA first got a good glimpse of Maureen at the nationally telecast Richard Tucker Music Foundation's 1998 Annual Lincoln Center Gala - a pretty face, a beautiful voice, a flawless rendition of Caro nome, Gilda's aria from Verdi's Rigoletto. It is not surprising that today Gilda has become a calling-card role in addition to Lucia di Lammermoor which she has sung to acclaim in Philadephia, Cincinnati, Vienna and Trieste.

Maureen O'Flynn begins 2002 with her debut at the San Diego Opera in the role of role of GILDA. As anyone will tell you who has seen her perform and heard her mellifluous, lyrical voice, and as the photos below show, GILDA is a role she can call her own. She is a convincing Gilda, and her Caro nome was flawless as always.

She is shown here with tenor Frank Porretta in the role of the Duke of Mantua. But as you can probably tell from their modern dress, this is not your typical Rigoletto production. It is in fact Hollywood director Bruce Beresford's controversial adaptation in which 16th century Mantua is transposed to 20th century Venice Beach, California, the Duke morphed into a movie mogul and the court jester Rigoletto into an agent. The music remains unchanged. Hollywood-style Regie-theatre, as the Europeans would call it. Could this possibly be opera's wave of the future?
