IMMORTAL BELOVED
A 1994 movie about Beethoven's secret love is a good enough way to give the unwashed a broad overview of the the great composer's music. It is masterfully scored, with excerpted performances by the cream of the crop of today's classical musicians - Murray Perahia, Emmanuel Ax, Bryn Terfel, Renee Fleming, etal -  with Sir Georg Solti conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

AMADEUS Winner of 8 OSCARs - 1984, including Best Sound
Although it popularizes many "Mozart myths" that have been debunked, this movie is perhaps the most enjoyable introduction to the life and works of the musical genius of all time. The music is of course Mostly Mozart, superbly performed by the Academy of St, Martin-in-the Fields conducted by Sir Neville Marriner. It is known to have opened the door to the enjoyment of classical music for many people who were at best indifferent to it before. Now available also as a 3-disc box set which contains music from scenes not included in the original 2-disc soundtrack.
