...when it works, it is the greatest coming together
of the visual and the aural
One can say with a high degree of certainty
that among today's Hollywood celebrities, film and stage actor MICHAEL
YORK, whose wide filmography includes Cabaret, Logan's Run, Romeo
and Juliet, The Three Musketeers, Murder on the Orient Express and
the various "Austin Powers" movies, knows his music and loves
opera with a passion. A regular at LA Opera where he is seen with his
wife on almost every opening night of each production, and where he
has hosted gala concerts (e.g., the tribute to the late Peter Hemmings,
LA Opera's founding General Director), he has also taken his spoken
art to performances with the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl (e.g.,
as Salieri in a concert version of the musical Amadeus). Most
recently, he performed with Long Beach Opera - LA County's other
opera company of note, in a unique double-bill program entitled "STRAUSS
MEETS FRANKENSTEIN" that superbly showcased his abundant dramatic
and comic talent.
In this video clip, York talks about the origins of his passion for
opera, his feelings about the art form, and the high point of his opera-going
experience.
