attagirl! CAROLINE GOULDING

She's a radiant 16 and on the threshold of a starbound career as a solo violinist.  Already, she has graced the concert stage playing with some of America's prestigious orchestras (e.g., the Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Cleveland Pops, Buffalo Philharmonic, Aspen Concert Orchestra). And her debut CD is soon to be released by a major label.  Rising from the ranks of the youngest Gen Y-ers (i.e., those born in the early to mid 1990s), she's certainly one of the best signs yet that classical music is very much alive and well, an ideal role model for the Gen Z-ers after her.

Consider the first milestones of her blooming career and there can be little doubt in your mind that hers will be a life in the limelight:

- at age 3, a beginning fiddler (under the tutelage of Julia Kurtyka)1

1Today Caroline studies with Paul Kantor at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She has also attended the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Starling-Delay Symposium and the Interlochen Center for the Arts.

- at 13, first prize winner of the Aspen Music Festival's Concerto Competition and--joining the ranks of star violinists Joshua Bell, Gil Shaham, Maxim Vengerov, Midori, Sarah Chang, Hilary Hahn, and Leila Josefiewicz--a Stradivari Society of Chicago recipient of a venerable 1617 Amati

- at 15, signatory to a record deal with the major label Telarc which releases her debut CD August 25, 2024

- appearances on the following popular TV programs: NBC's "Today Show" and "The Martha Stewart Show"

- from age 13 onward, a regular performer in National Public Radio's "From the Top," the most popular classical music radio program in the US that showcases the country's most talented young musicians, performing in 2007 as an invited guest in the program's televised version, the PBS TV series "From the Top: Live from Carnegie Hall," both hosted by acclaimed pianist and FanFaire-featured artist CHRISTOPHER O'RILEY with whom Caroline frequently appears in concert, including the recital program on her debut CD, FanFaire's SUMMER 2009 CD GIVEAWAY which received a 2010 GRAMMY nomination for Caroline as BEST INSTRUMENTAL SOLOIST (without orchestra).

The delightful music clip you heard on opening this page is taken from Track 13 of this CD.  Listen to excerpts from other tracks on the recording, and enjoy the vibrant freshness of Caroline's sound, her wonderful phrasing, and a technique that combines grace with youth's sense of daring and adventure.  Her innate artistry and musicianship, which can only grow as she matures, are served well by the very evident chemistry between her and O'RILEY who has de facto become to her a mentor, colleague/collaborator, and friend.

2with JANINE RANDALL, a well-respected pianist from Scottish Cape Breton in Nova Scotia where she founded and directs the Ceilidh Trail School of Celtic Music where since age eight, CAROLINE has studied the distinctive Gaelic styles of fiddling which she so ably demonstrates in this recital program.

Ah, but these are only miniature pieces, you might say - which was a thought that also briefly crossed our minds. But how about "heavier" stuff?  Look no further than From the Top's website where she has been playing "heavy" stuff since age 13, with Christopher O'Riley and other young musicians. Or simply click the links below (Real Player required):

Brahms: Sonatensatz in C Minor

Bach: Sonata No.1 in G Minor, Presto and Suite of Two and Three Part Inventions

Brahms: Trio No.1 in B major, Op. 8, 1st mvt.

Mendelssohn: Concerto for Violin, Piano & Strings in D minor, 3rd mvt.

The following "From the Top" links highlight Caroline's versatility, her precociously confident showmanship, sense of humor and vivacious personality (Real Player required):

Bela Fleck: County Clare (Caroline joins a trio and the composer/banjo player Bela Fleck in a performance of a piece by Fleck)

Caroline Goulding's Musical Living (Caroline "hosts" a show of her own in which she introduces banjo player Bela Fleck to her fellow young musicians and suggests ways to make his instrument case a more interesting container.)

So... there you have it, a portrait of the artist as a young woman who, while still only a college freshman, is already on the threshold of what could prove to be an exciting, stellar international career.3 Attagirl, CAROLINE!

3 She makes her first European appearance next April with the Extramadura Symphony Orchestra in Badajoz, Spain where she will perform Brahms' Double Concerto for Violin and Violoncello in A minor, Op. 102.

Caroline will also be heard on a forthcoming Telarc release produced in association with From the Top - the preeminent showcase for young musicians now celebrating their 10th anniversary season - and the Cincinnati Pops under Erich Kunzel. This new album (also released on August 25th) is entitled "From the Top at the Pops" and features some of the brightest young artists to appear on From the Top’s radio program. Caroline performs the third movement from Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings in D minor. BUY THE CD

On September 8th at 7:30, Caroline Goulding and Christopher O’Riley will perform selections from Caroline’s debut CD and From the Top at the Pops in a concert celebrating the release of both recordings to be held at New York’s (Le) Poisson Rouge.
