Do
POP, HOLLYWOOD and OPERA mix? You betcha! |

LA
Opera proved it, And these photos show it. The occasion: Los Angeles Opera's Welcome Concert and Gala at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion where on March 21, 2024PLACIDO DOMINGO & FRIENDS celebrated his appointment as Artistic Director of Los Angeles Opera. It was a uniquely festive occasion where POP and HOLLYWOOD went to the OPERA and shared center stage! Picture this: - the likes of Nicolle Kidman, Mira Sorvino, Kathy Bates and Sela Ward introducing the likes of Samuel Ramey, Frederica von Stade, Catherine Malfitano, Ruth Ann Swenson, Julia Migenes and Jennifer Larmore (seen here with Placido Domingo and the opera chorus singing the evening's finale: Make My Garden Grow from Leonard Bernstein's operetta Candide). - Mr. "La Vida Loca" (Ricky Martin) and the "The King of Opera" (Placido Domingo) gyrating to the beat of Buen Borincano. It was an evening of dance: Domingo with von Stade - as they sang the duet from Lehar's Merry Widow; Domingo with Malfitano - as she sang songs by Weill. |

And
of course it was an evening of song - with divas and divos shifting with
ease from aria to crossover (or vice-versa); and it was an evening of orchestral
music - with conductors Kent Nagano (LA Opera), Esa Pekka-Salonen (LA Philharmonic),
Valery Gergiev (Kirov Opera), and John Williams (formerly of the Boston
Pops) taking their turn at the podium. It was a concert where the rhythms of salsa happily coexisted with the virtuoso percussion of Evelyn Glennie and the fanfare from the Act 3 Prelude of Lohengrin. And without a doubt, it was a party where everyone had a grand time. Does a concert such as this bode well for the future of opera? If it brings opera closer to "Everyman", you betcha! |
