VIDEO: GROWING UP WITH BACH WELL-TEMPERED CLAVIER The FAZIOLI TRASIMENO FESTIVAL |

In this video clip, ANGELA HEWITT talks about Bach's "Well-tempered Clavier" - two books, each consisting of 24 preludes and fugues written in the 12 major and 12 minor keys, (24 pieces in 24 keys taken twice and hence its nickname "the 48"). If one counts the preludes and fugues separately, and as she points out, there are actually 96 pieces altogether - a most daunting task for even the hardiest of concert pianists to perform back-to-back. But MS. HEWITT does it as if it were the easiest thing in the world. To be able to play BOOK I completely from memory (and BOOK II with only an occasional glance at the score) as she did on her BACH WORLD TOUR is testament to her great gifts that so beautifully hide the blood, sweat and tears - not to count the years - that surely must have gone into acquiring mastery of the music. One
can pay no higher compliment to her definitive interpretation of BACH
than to echo the words spoken by her father (a well-known organist in
his time) upon hearing her recording of The Well-Tempered Clavier:"When
I listen to you, I don't really hear you - I only hear Bach!" |
