JAKE
HEGGIE: composer/pianist/master teacher America's
most popular young composer of opera and song
THE COMPOSER
-
Jake Heggie talks about his DREAMWORKS
For
five weeks every year since 2003, as spring unwinds into summer,
the beautiful campus of Pepperdine University, nestled in the hills
overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Malibu (California), becomes the
home of SongFest.* The name suggests a festival of song, which it
is, or eventually becomes - as Day 1 rolls on to Days 2, 3, 4 and
so on. Actually it starts life more as a boot camp where young professional
singers and gifted would-be singers and pianists learn the nitty-gritty
of the ART SONG under the tutelage of artists of the highest level.
It was here where we caught up with Jake Heggie, a Song Fest Resident
Artist for the past several years. In this video interview,
Jake Heggie shares with unbridled enthusiasm his compositions**
of recent days and the dream works that will one day take their
rightful place in his growing list of masterpieces.
* SongFest is directed by Rosemary Hyler Ritter.
** Among the recent works he talks about in this interview is "Monologue"
from Master Class, the play by Terrence McNally, which the legendary soprano
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has included in her Farewell Tour program. Click HERE
