in which his beautiful piano playing is heard from beginning to end was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music (Original Score)!
Shortly before Oscars Night, we asked Jean-Yves, who records exclusively with Decca Records, to tell us a little bit about how he came to play the piano solo in the movie. It all happened very quickly in January 2005, he said. He learned through his agent at Decca that the composer DARIO MARIANELLI, whom he didn’t know personally, had been looking for him to find out if he would be interested in playing the piano solo for the soundtrack of “PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.” They met, he liked the score, and they recorded the music in London shortly thereafter. To his delight, Jean-Yves learned that Dario, who made particular reference to his recording of ERIK SATIE’s complete works for piano, has a collection of his CDs.
So, how did he find the film? He urged us to “Go see it. It’s a beautiful movie and the cinematography is great.”
And Dario Marianelli? “He’s ADORABLE!” Jean-Yves exclaimed wholeheartedly.
For his part, the young composer wrote, as wholeheartedly:
“We were fortunate enough that JEAN-YVES THIBAUDET was interested in performing on the soundtrack of the film, and at that point I just knew that I could really let the piano be the heart of the score.”
As indeed it is!

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is Jean-Yves’ third movie performance. In BRIDE OF THE WIND (2001), a film about Alma Mahler, he both played the piano and made a cameo appearance. In 1996 he played two Impromptus by FRANZ SCHUBERT in PORTRAIT OF A LADY”, a film based on the novel by HENRY JAMES. Most recently, Jean-Yves recorded the soundtrack of the 2012 film “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”, composed by Alexandre Desplat.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is Dario’s first Academy Award Nomination. Born in Pisa (Italy) and educated in Florence and London, he has composed music for five movies, but he made his mark as a movie music composer with The Brothers Grimm, released in 2005. Dario has also written music for many feature films, TV dramas, documentaries, animations, theatre, contemporary dance and concerts.
