This Ring was above all a cultural and political event: Polish and German artists worked side by side in almost perfect harmony. It was staged at the Warsaw Opera, in the big Wielki Theater, one of the largest in the world, having perhaps the most spacious stage. There were difficult confrontations with the technical director, who perhaps becuase he was new to Schneider-Siemssen's great ideas could say nothing but "That won't work!" But at the last moment everything came together beautifully and with joy and luck brought this great humanitarian task to fulfillment. [From G. Schneider-Siemssen in conversation with K. Pahlen: Die Bühne, mein Leben , Springer Verlag 1996; (The Stage, My Life - English translation by James Mulder, in press)] Elsewhere in FanFaire... more on Richard Wagner, The Ring Cycle and the Ring at the Met. |
