The
Cosmic Space of GÜNTHER

The stage is his world: on it and all around it, for the last 50 years, he has played many parts.... |
||
He
is famed for his opera sets, but his designs
for ballet and the concert stage are no less
splendid. Combined with his skillful use of light projections, they make
us see the music, leaving indelible impressions in our memories. The secret
of his success is embodied in his "10 Commandments
for a Stage Designer." Briefly during the war he was Germany's youngest impresario - he ran and performed with a touring comedy/cabaret theater group. As seen below, he did excellent impersonations of popular personalities - which means he could have become an actor too? |

He
uses light like a magic wand, creating visual wonders on the stage. Outdoors,
in his festivals of light, edifices and public
spaces become giant kaleidoscopes of color. He believes holography, which
he has successfully employed in the marionette theater, will revolutionize
the stage of the future. Late in his career, he summoned up the courage to attempt stage direction - for him the most difficult of theatrical professions. It turned out to be a happy decision, the learning curve proved not too steep. Tristan, Dutchman, Fidelio, Tosca, Rusalka - all drew excellent notices. But of course! For in his head and heart he already knew them all. |
And
even today as he enters his 75th year, he continues to explore new ideas,
working with physicists on the use of new technologies in the service of
his art and the stage of the future. |
