He had been thinking about it for years - how to transport the magic of projections and lighting effects from the exclusivity of the operatic stage to the openness of public spaces... a festival for everyman. And then he discovered that it was possible to project on architecture, which was how his first Festival of Light came to be - in 1981 in the park around Salzburg's Kleßheim Castle. It was a show of visual wonders - the castle now a forest, then a colorful pastiche of abstract forms, and then a raging fire (so real it almost caused a panic!), while in the park people danced around inflatable sculptures that glowed in the night as music filled the air. With the event's success, the next festivals were surely just a matter of time - which proved to be the case (see below). Also shown above is the Vienna State Opera during the 1994/95 Opera Ball, which Günther Schneider-Siemssen brilliantly adorned for the occasion. |
