BORIS GODUNOV Music and Libretto by Modest Mussorgsky; Musical and Stage Direction: Herbert von Karajan; Nicolai Giaurov as Boris Godunov - Salzburg Festival, 1965. The spectacular sets for this legendary 1965 production of Modest Mussourgsky's gloomy but musically powerful opera about the Russian people and the mad czar Boris Godunov were Schneider-Siemssen's first for the renowned Salzburg Festival, securing his claim to fame. "It was really a milestone in my life and in my artistic development." His basic concept for the opera was based on the Russian cross which was always highly visible, sometimes as projections, and around which the individual scenes were built. Herbert von Karajan conducted and directed this gigantic and luxurious production that was laden with pageantry. It was received with great international acclaim; then Premier Nikita Khrushchev even came to Salzburg to see the opera and was deeply impressed. |

SALOME Music and libretto by Richard Strauss; Musical and Stage Direction: Herbert von Karajan; Hildegard Behrens as Salome - Salzburg Festival 1977 "Salome,... I think is one of my more interesting designs. There I wanted to be expressionistic, according to the art deco style of the piece... A youthful approach, which Richard Strauss established in 1905! And naturally Oscar Wilde as well. It was by no means realistic to say nothing of naturalistic. A main character is the moon, which plays a very large role therefore the moon took on a meaningful position in the stage design - ambiguous, somehow fantastic, even uncanny; an almost super-dimensional moon face behind the veils and transparent gauze. Many aspects of the bright moon could be revealed - moon visions, moon variations...." Elsewhere in FanFaire... more on Salome. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
