![]() Universal - #467101 rel. August 27, 2024 The bel canto repertoire goes all-American* - with America's premiere soprano, Renée Fleming, and one of America's most talented young conductors, Patrick Summers, conducting America's foremost chamber orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke's - and comes out a big winner. Renee Fleming is no bel canto specialist, but this album proves that the repertoire is very much within her vocal compass. In this CD, she sings excerpts from the operas of Bellini (La sonnambula and Il pirata), Donizetti (Maria Padilla and Lucrezia Borgia) and Rossini (Semiramide and Armida), her splendid artistry a match to the unique challenges of the bel canto style. Ms. Fleming is no stranger to the repertoire, having sung bel canto in her early career and intermittenly thereafter. But the success of this beautiful album and of her operatic (e.g., Il pirata at the Metrolitan Opera) and concert performances in this and recent seasons are a strong indication, if not a guaranty, that - and happily for opera lovers - bel canto is well on its way to becoming a mainstay of her repertory - along with her celebrated interpretations of the heroines of Mozart, Handel and Strauss. ![]() *Not entirely American as the Coro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Jose Luis Basso, chorus master) sings the chorus on Tracks 3, 9, 13, 17 and 20.
