Richard Leech is avowedly San Diego's "favorite tenor". The tenor in turn admits to having a soft spot for San Diego Opera (SDO), calling it one of his artistic "homes". It is a company well known for recognizing young talent early in their careers, giving them the chances they need to prove themselves. Indeed SDO has done its bit in nurturing young singers*. Quite often it happens that one or two seasons later, these singers debut at the MET and burst into the international opera scene. Richard Leech has performed at the San Diego Opera with increasing regularity since his debut here as Faust in 1988, and not surprisingly has chosen the company as the venue for two important role debuts - as the melancholic poet in Massenet's Werther in 1993 and as the fiery Don Jose in Bizet's Carmen in 1997. Above is a slide show of photos from some of Richard Leech's San Diego performances. Below is a chronology of his San Diego performances.(Click HERE for a photo-essay on the making of Carmen and Romeo et Juliette.) ![]() |
