Richard Leech

in ITALY

Teatro Comunale di Firenze

Italy, the birthplace of Grand Opera.... Richard Leech, known for his mastery of the Italian lyric repertoire, made his debut in December 1988 in the beautiful city of Florence at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze where he sang an "excellent" Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly. He reprised the role in October 1997.

It was also the vehicle for his debut at the La Scala* in Milan in May 1990. The following year (in June 1991), he returned for Rodolfo in La Bohème with no less than Italy's star soprano, Mirella Freni as Mimì. Of the young tenor on the rise, Opera wrote: "...and Richard Leech as Rodolfo did not suffer by comparison. He gave a refined performance and is full of promise for the future."

* In 1981, shortly after winning the top prize in Italy's Enrico Caruso Voice Competition Richard Leech was offered two years of study at La Scala. The young singer declined the offer, convinced that at the Tri-Cities Opera, he already was receiving what young singers could only dream of - the best training and numerous opportunities to perform.
