| Richard Leech was introduced to British audiences in November 1991 at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden. The vehicle - Meyerbeer's rarely-staged Les Huguenots, the same opera that introduced him to Europe four years earlier. Talk about the controversial production somewhat drowned out talk about the singing. But to those who listened, Richard Leech singing the punishing role of Raoul - with remarkable ease, in impeccable French and in "spinto tenor" voice - was "worth the visit" (-The London Times, 11/7/91). He returned to England in September 1996, giving a soaring performance at the Royal Opera House as Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème. He was scheduled to portray another Rodolfo character, in a role debut performance of Verdi's Luisa Miller, in the Royal Opera House's 1999 season. Unfortunately, this event will likely be postponed to a later date in light of the company's recent announcement suspending performances until the reopening of the renovated opera house in December 1999. |
