Hall |
"...Truly a jewel box of sound," was how the venerable Maestro Herbert von Karajan* described Suntory Hall, Tokyo's first large concert hall. It opened its doors to the public on October 12, 1986 in celebration of Suntory's 60th anniversary of whiskey production. The design by Shoichi Sano (Yasui Architects) incorporated the recommendations of Maestro von Karajan and other eminent conductors and musicians from all over the world. The result: a stunning main hall for orchestral music and a small hall for ensemble and recital performances, in which visual and acoustical oneness between performers and audience is achieved. Thus it can be said of Suntory - in music as in drink, a purveyor of quality. *The plaza in front of Hall has been named Herbert von Karajan Platz in ARK Hills in memory of the Maestro who was closely associated with Suntory Hall.
