The Sumida Triphony Hall located in the Sumida ward on the eastern edge of Tokyo opened in October 1997. It is the new home of the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra (NJP) which was established in 1972 in response to a rallying call by Boston Symphony's Maestro Seiji Ozawa, NJP's Honorary Artistic Director since 1991, to"make good music together." Sumida is unique in that unlike most other concert halls, it provides everything every member of the orchestra needs - from concert stage to offices to locker rooms, a home to the NJP in every sense of the word.

" Triphony" stands for the harmony of three sounds: that of the people, the artists, and the hall itself. The Triphony Hall consists of 2 halls: the 1800-seat Concert Hall equipped at the back of the center stage with a pipe organ built by Jehmlich AG of Germany; and the 252-seat Recital Hall, built primarily as a facility for the artistic and cultural activities of the Sumida community available for use by anyone, professional or amateur, at a reasonable fee.
