“For me Hildegard Behrens was an especially exciting singer, who distinguished herself over many performances at the Met, particularly as Elektra, Marie in Wozzeck, Leonore in Fidelio, and Brünnhilde, which are perhaps her most memorable characterizations. And when we taped this performance [of Elektra], she was in a kind of extraordinary, transcendental form. She had acquired a physique du role where she actually looks hollow and emaciated and worn out onstage, and yet the voice is constantly powerful and expressive. She captures the whole range of emotions, and the voice was working in an amazing way. Everything is as though it were actually happening in front of your eyes. Also, she controls all the musical details while giving terrific vocal and expressive abandon. Every little note is centered in intonation, and she looks so ravaged and yet so beautiful, while singing with enormous intensity and beauty of tone – incredibly moving!”
- James Levine, Music Director - Metropolitan Opera (excerpted from the booklet accompanying the DVD release in 2010 of Ms. Behrens’ Elektra as part of the 12-title set celebrating Maestro Levine’s 40 years as The Met’s Music Director.

“Hildegard Behrens was an artist of passion and commitment. I treasure the memory of our collaboration in the Munich Residence Theatre production of Tristan and Isolde and the Elektra in Salzburg. Those were magnificent performances…vibrant, compelling, memorable. May her spirit continue to inspire us all.”
