This January, GREAT PERFORMANCES completes the centenary celebration of the great American composer AARON COPLAND with the telecast on PBS of the program COPLAND'S AMERICA, a WNET production. In New York, the gala one-hour performance documentary will air Sunday, January 21 on Thirteen/WNET(check local listings).

Jonathan Sheffer conducts the Eos Orchestra, with baritone Thomas Hampson and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. The program will feature such popular Copland works as Appalachian Spring, El Salon Mexico, Fanfare for the Common Man, and The Boatman's Dance. Highlights of the program are the TV premieres of The Chinese Herbalist section from the score that the composer wrote for the 1939 World's Fair, a puppet show From Sorcery to Science, and excerpts from the Fair documentary The City.
