ABOUT UCSD-TV:

Award-winning UCSD-TV is a non-profit, non-commercial broadcast station operating on behalf of the campus through the Division of Extended Studies and Public Programs at the University of California, San Diego. Its mission is to provide San Diego viewers with locally produced, regionally focused programs that enrich understanding of new ideas and key issues. This is accomplished by covering public events, performances, and lectures presented by faculty on the campus, as well as interview programs with experts in the arts, public affairs, humanities, the sciences and medicine.

Two opera programs on UCSD-TV are produced in collaboration with San Diego Opera:
OPERA TALK, a new program launched in the Fall of 1998 and. SAN DIEGO OPERA SPOTLIGHT, which began 3 years ago and continues this 1998-99 season. Below is the broadcast schedule for the current season.

UCSD-TV and San Diego Opera have also produced special shows on the world premiere of The Conquistador, Vivica Genaux in Recital, The Making of an Opera Book, which broadcast earlier this year. Master class with Maestro Edoardo Müller, is being aired this season. Another Master class show with mezzo-soprano Regina Resnik is scheduled for next year.

Opera Talk:
A new half-hour program, "OperaTalk! with Nick Reveles," launched in the fall of 1998 features Dr. Nicolas Reveles, San Diego Opera's new Director of Education and Outreach . Anoted musicologist, performer and opera lecturer, Dr. Reveles has been giving San Diego Opera Preview Lectures for years, speaking about the plot, musical construction and background of each opera in the regular season at locations around the county. Now this popular format has been modified for television, in a show which will appeal to opera buffs and novices alike. Dr. Reveles will present an "OperaTalk!" on each of the five operas in San Diego Opera's International Season from a variety of interesting locations around San Diego. In each show Dr. Reveles will explain the basic plot of the opera, talk about the composer and his work and play excerpts for audience members to listen for when they attend the performance. Special guests will chime in with their different perspectives on the works and music.

San Diego Opera Spotlight is a half-hour show which airs the Friday night before each opening night of the regular season. It features behind-the-scenes footage from rehearsals and backstage as well as interviews with the leading artists in each opera. This program won a national award from OPERA America, and was nominated locally for an Emmy and a San Diego Press Club award. It returns with five shows in the 1999 season.
