VIVICA GENAUX, mezzo-soprano

photo: courtesy of Robert Lombardo Associates

Vivica Genaux was a relative unknown when she sang the role of the niece of  The Conquistador - the doomed Isabel de Matos, immediately following her  debut with the company in February 1997 in the role of the enchanting Isabella in Rossini's Italian Girl in Algiers.   She has since become a favorite at San Diego Opera, delighting audiences with a program of arias and songs by Rossini when she returned in October of the same year for a  recital performance accompanied by the young Canadian pianist Martin Dubé.  She performs with the company every two or three years - her latest as Sesto in Handel's Giulio Cesare - no longer a rising star but one of the most universally acclaimed mezzo-sopranos of today's generation of opera singers, a favorite not only in San Diego but in major opera houses all over the world..
