THIS
UNIQUE NEW CD
IS A TESTAMENT
to the GENIUS and VISION of
LALO SCHIFRIN
ARGENTINE-BORN COMPOSER
PIANIST & CONDUCTOR
Recorded with the CZECH
NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA in Prague, July 2010 / conducted
by LALO SCHIFRIN and KRYSTOF MAREK.
JAZZ and SYMPHONY - stylistically and structurally soooo different
one could say, paraphrasing Rudyard Kipling's view of East
and West, "JAZZ is JAZZ, and SYMPHONY is SYMPHONY, and
NEVER the twain shall meet." Obviously, this CD
belies this variation of Kipling's dictum which sets strictures
on music that LALO SCHIFRIN's boundless imagination would
never accept. "INVOCATIONS" is the seventh recording
in SCHIFRIN's series "JAZZ MEETS THE SYMPHONY" which
he started back in 1993, having realized from his early experience
with film scores that the differences between the two art
forms may in fact be only surface-deep. In reality, SCHIFRIN,
4-time GRAMMY winner, only had to look into his own person.
He is best known today for his compositions for film, but
his musical persona--indeed, his genius--was shaped both by
his training as a classical pianist (while a law student)
in Argentina and his studies at the Paris Conservatoire (with
Olivier MESSAIEN among others) and by his abiding interest
in jazz. In him, the TWAIN literally did meet! Thus, it is
no small wonder that his JAZZ MEETS THE SYMPHONY series has
met with resounding international success. And one can only
expect that his continuing explorations into the fusion of
these traditionally distinct art forms will lead to new insights
and thoroughly enjoyable musical experiences.
