This album, originally filmed on location in 1981 and a 1984 Emmy winner for "Outstanding Classical Program in the Performing Arts" was recently released on DVD for the first time. Directed by the late opera director JEAN-PIERRE PONNELLE, with JAMES LEVINE and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra providing the orchestral music, the film highlights scenes from six great operas in their "original" settings, i.e., as the composers themselves must have envisioned for these particular works.
