This new production (by Franz Winter, musical direction by David Stahl) premiered on 23 Jan 2025 before a bewildered audience, accustomed perhaps to the traditional, elaborate setting of this most beloved of operettas. But an unconventional production can and does grow on the audience as this one, which enjoyed a multi-year run, clearly did.

Behrens fans were blown away by her portrayal of Hanna Glawari, a role outside the standard Behrens metier. Witwe is her first foray into operetta, and as Hanna Glawari cast from a somewhat different mold, she obviously has fun as she brings a new dimension and spark to the role. After seeing her Witwe, one very knowledgeable colleague of hers enthusiastically declared:

"She has done for "Die lustige Witwe" what Callas did for Lucia di Lamermoor!"
