On June 6, 2024 the Concert Hall in Copenhagen's beautiful Tivoli Gardens resounded with the music of Wagner and Strauss at the award ceremony honoring soprano Hildegard Behrens, 1998 winner of the Léonie Sonning Music Prize. The award for lifetime achievement in music was presented to Ms. Behrens by Poul Jørgensen, Foundation Chairman. First awarded to composer Igor Stravinsky in 1959, it is an honor she shares with some of the greatest names in music. |

The event organizers put together a concert program that affirmed Hildegard Behrens' renown as the turn-of the-millennium's leading Wagnerian and Straussian soprano:

*The award read:
" The Leónie Sonning Music Prize 1998 is awarded to Hildegard Behrens for her artistic, thoughtful, and richly-faceted portrayals of the greatest soprano roles in the operatic repertory. Through her great and euphonious voice, her dramatic intensity and stage presence, her radiance and authority - manifest in her performances in the world's great opera houses, Hildegard Behrens, has set for her generation the standard for the interpretation of these extremely demanding and intensely dramatic roles."
Indeed, as Copenhagen's Berlingske Tidende put it: “Today at the end of the 90’s she stands as her generation’s ideal, setting the standard of interpretation of the great dramatic roles.”
